An interview by Mike Wing
The Canada Disability Benefit isn’t just for people with disabilities, it’s for the Canadian economy. An equitable and just future for Canada includes people with disabilities and there is a need for not just any Disability Benefit Act, but one that actually helps everyone. Desjarlais shares that for every $1 spent on the Disability Benefit, $6 is saved in overall government spending on bandage solutions that pull people with disabilities out of poverty, unemployment or lack of housing. This calls for the need for preventative measures and harm reduction that in turn will benefit the Canadian economy.
“The more we support those who need support at the preventative level, the more we save at hospitals, the more we save on infrastructure, the more we save on so many more fronts that the Canada Disability Benefit would actually save our economy billions of dollars, if we had just implemented it fairly.”
